Destiny features a range of Weapons.

Categorization[]

Weapons in Destiny are categorized dependent on which slot they fit into: Primary Weapons, Heavy Weapons, and Special Weapons. Additionally, weapons have tiers that define their rate of fire, damage, and effectiveness: Basic, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary, and Exotic. Each weapon additionally has a level and set of traits; Accuracy, Handling, Stability, and Magazine Size. Each weapon has a base set of each of these values, which can be upgraded and modified as levels are gained. Each of these improvements change the way the weapon handles and performs. For example, when accuracy is upgraded, landing centered shots is much easier, and ranged combat will be more effective. When stability is upgraded, recoil is reduced, reducing the spread of weapon fire and allowing you to keep your targets centered at all times. Upgrades are purchases using Glimmer, or through the use of Weapon Kits and Talent Points.

Exotic Weapons[]

Most Exotic weapons are strong, but limited in one way or another. They tend to inflict lots of damage when they are fully upgraded, but only unlock their special abilities by being used.

Primary Weapons[]

Primary Weapons are those used for standard combat, and can include hand cannons, auto rifles, pulse rifles and scout rifles. These weapons are typically specialized for the type of Guardian and role in which you are playing. While there are class specific weapons for each class, most weapons are general use and can be used by anyone.

Special Weapons[]

Special Weapons are weapons which can be used for a highly specific purpose such as sidearms, shotguns, sniper rifles and fusion rifles fit into this category. Special Weapons demand their own specific types of ammunition, and often trade off massive damage for slow reload or high recoil.

Heavy Weapons[]

This category of weapons include machine guns and rocket launchers, they deal massive damage which have high recoil, and long-duration reload cycles. Best used against tough enemies and vehicles as a supplement to primary weapon fire.

Weapon Types[]

Automatic Rifles[]

Automatic Rifles are capable of fully-automatic fire with no limit on rate of fire. These weapons, though effective against large groups of unarmed enemies, fire less powerful rounds than other rifles, requiring effective planning and implementation to be effective. Additionally, their fully-automatic nature causes them to be much harder to keep under control than other weapons.

Automatic Rifles

Fusion Rifles[]

Fusion Rifles are high-damage rifles which use intensely focused energy to create powerful and long-ranged shots. They have also been called the "Laser Gun" and the "Particle Cannon" jokingly in the first Bungie Podcast.

Fusion Rifles

Hand Cannons[]

Hand Cannons are Bungie's name for hand guns in Destiny. They are extremely powerful, but lack accuracy and range due to their short barrel and heavy recoil. They make up for this by being extremely maneuverable in closed spaces, and allow the player to have a knife in their free hand, for hand-to-hand combat.

Hand Cannons

Machine Guns[]

Machine Guns are strong but cumbersome. They can inflict a lot of damage but are often inaccurate and very slow to reload. However, no other weapon is better at defending locations than this class of gun, due to their large magazine size, ability to be mounted, and powerful rounds.

Machine Guns

Pulse Rifles[]

These fire in short burst of 3 or more rounds at a time. They are more effective than Automatic Rifles at long range, but are ill-fitted for close range due to burst restrictions.

Pulse Rifles

Rocket Launchers[]

Often impractical but very fun to use. They are very cumbersome, have a small ammo capacity, and tend to not be very accurate, but do tons of damage[1] and work great on enemy vehicles such as Devil Walkers.

Rocket Launchers

Scout Rifles[]

Scout rifles are medium-long range single-shot rifles, filling the role of Designated Marksman rifles.[2]

Scout Rifles

Shotguns[]

Shotguns are strong, but limited guns. They tend to inflict lots of damage, but only from a very short range and have low ammo capacity.

Shotguns

Sniper Rifles[]

Sniper Rifles are very effective from long-range, allowing a talented marksman to wreak havoc upon a group of enemies from a safe distance. They are ineffective at close range due to their large size, weight, and fire-rate restriction.
